2. Describe the work atmosphere. How are decisions made, is it cooperative or competitive, what is the dress code and work ethic of the organization?

The work atmosphere at Duke Medical Center & Library is somewhat relaxed, with how you work on different aspects of projects. The decisions are made in a few different ways. The first way is cooperative. A great example of this is every Monday the IT department has a meeting and they discuss their projects and talk about how they are working on it and talk about how it could be better. The other way is more doing what your boss wants. An example of this is my website project. My boss told me an outline of what she wanted, and I worked for a few days on it, then we meet again and talk about what I should try and fix and what should stay the same.


            Throughout the year the dress code changes. While I am here over the summer the dress code is more business casual, you can wear jeans, polo shirts, and tennis shoes along with what you can normally wear. During the rest of the year jeans are not allowed and you can only wear polo shirts if they are the Duke shirts. The work ethic is pretty good. Everybody that I know is always working on their projects. The only time when people aren’t working is when we get an hour for lunch, but you aren’t supposed to work during that time any.

So far I have learned a lot about myself. As much fun as I had in my internship I couldn't see myself working that job for the rest of my life. In my career I want to be out in the field and working with hands on things. I could not see myself working in a desk for the rest of my life. On the other hand the work that I did was fun. I enjoyed making a website and I wish I could have worked more with the other websites. That part of the job I could do. 9. What major problems or frustrations have you experienced or observed in your work? How did you handle it?              My main project was creating a new website for some old material that my boss had and wanted updated. So of course, my main problem came from this project. The problem was that I needed to put videos into my website that had Closed Captioning, but that did not take up a lot of size. I also needed to create the closed captioning for the videos. This was a problem because I did not know how to add closed captioning files to an imbedded video. So, to handle it I talked with my boss about the site and we decided to go with a YouTube player so the closed captioning files could be added easier, and for the closed captioning I found a site that was easy to work on. Because of deciding to go with a YouTube player, and working on a website for CC I fixed my problem of videos on my website.

3. How have your classroom experiences prepared you for the internship? What do you wish you had learned prior to the internship? Many different experiences I have had in the classroom have helped me during my internship. They have helped me with the quality of my work and my ability to change when something needs to be fixed. For example, one of my teachers changed a project after we had worked on it a bit and it helped me learn how to adapt more. Similarly, I had to change a project up a bit after I had worked on it for a while. Other experiences in the classroom have prepared me by improving my quality of work, so when I am working in my internship I can bring a higher quality of work. Before my internship I learned a lot of good skills from many of my classes but there are a few things that I wished I learned before I started.
